01 About

Built by
players,
for players.

VBTC is a registered British Columbia non-profit society, founded by a group of beach tennis players who wanted to give the sport a proper home in Vancouver. Our mission: develop and promote beach tennis across the Lower Mainland.

The club was founded by a small group of players who had been organizing pickup games on Vancouver beaches for years. We registered as a non-profit because we wanted what we were building to outlast any one of us — a real, lasting home for beach tennis on the West Coast.

Today the club runs a full summer season: social play, two tournaments, and events that bring everyone together. We work alongside the Canadian Beach Tennis Association (CBTA) as beach tennis grows in Canada.

Whether you're brand new to the racket or coming from a competitive tennis or pickleball background, there's a court and a community here for you.

02 The Sport

Tennis,
on sand,
in doubles.

Beach tennis is what happens when you take the spirit of tennis, drop it on a beach volleyball court, and turn up the volume. Fast, social, and surprisingly easy to pick up.

You serve, you volley, you laugh when the wind takes your perfect shot sideways. Every point is alive — no waiting through long rallies. The court is small, the action is constant, and because the sport is still young in Canada, every player you meet on the sand is helping to build something.

Born in Italy in the 1970s and now played professionally on the ITF tour with millions of players worldwide, beach tennis has finally arrived on Canada's West Coast. We use solid paddles instead of strung rackets, low-compression tennis balls, and the same net height as beach volleyball.

Up

A mini-coaching session to open the season, led by our club coaches. Players worked through the fundamentals on the sand — grip, serve, and the volley game — then stayed to play. The start of everything.

How do I register for the Open?
Registration runs through Zeffy — register your team here. Entry is $70 per team. Registration closes August 19, with full refunds available until August 16 and team transfers accepted until August 19.
What if my division is full?
Join the waitlist — it's free and it's on the same registration page. Tell us which division you want and we'll contact teams in order as spots open up. A waitlist entry is not a confirmed spot.
What are the divisions?
Six divisions, eight teams each, at two levels. A/B (Advanced) is for players who rally consistently at pace, smash with control, and defend under pressure. C/D (Intermediate) is for recreational and developing players still building consistency but comfortable smashing or defending at pace. Saturday runs Mixed A/B and Mixed C/D. Sunday runs Men's and Women's at both levels. One entry covers a team of two.
What happens if the weather is bad?
August 29–30 is the reserve weekend. If a day can't be played, that day moves to the same day of the reserve weekend — Saturday to Saturday, Sunday to Sunday — and each day is decided separately. If your team can't make the new date, you'll receive a 100% refund.
Are matches refereed?
No. The Open is fully self-officiated — players call their own lines and score, as is standard in beach tennis at this level. If a dispute can't be resolved on court, bring it to the organization table and our Operations Lead will settle it. Conduct issues escalate to the Tournament Director.
What are the court rules?
Net height is 1.70 m on every court, in every division. The only positional rule is the 3-metre prohibited zone — no other court-position restrictions apply. Full rules are published in the tournament regulations and the player booklet, which every registered team receives before the event.
Do I need my own equipment?
For the Open, yes — bring your own paddle. Official balls are supplied. At our social events we provide loaner paddles and balls, so you can try the sport before buying anything.
Do I need to be a member to play?
Membership is free for 2026 and we'd love you to join — sign up here. It's how we stay in touch about events, and it takes a minute.
Where do you play?
The Open is at Locarno Beach in Vancouver. Social sessions rotate between Locarno, Spanish Banks, Kits Beach, and other waterfront sites depending on city access — locations are announced in our WhatsApp group.
I have a tennis or pickleball background — does that help?
Yes, hugely. Tennis players adapt fastest to the strokes; volleyball players adapt fastest to footwork on sand and the doubles dynamic. Pickleball and padel players also tend to pick it up quickly. That said, beach tennis has its own rhythm — even seasoned racket-sport players will find new things to learn.
